Church Picnics 1900-1922.At their peak, two to four thousand people arrived in Killaloe for the annual church picnic. Crowds came from Ottawa and points east and west by train; return fare to Ottawa was about one dollar. Others traveled 30 to 40 miles by horse or horse and buggies and wagons.The Renfrew Pipe Band would lead the crowd up to the picnic grounds where food was served from early in the day until late evening. There were soft drinks and ice cream and a sign which read "Lemonade Served in the Shade". There were speeches by members of parliament, fiddling and old time dancing contests, baseball games and horse races. Pearl Murack Collection.
